What we source
The Balkans, particularly Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, have a deep industrial base in wood processing and furniture manufacturing. Forest coverage of over 60% in Bosnia means consistent raw material supply, and the manufacturing industry has exported to Western Europe for decades.
We source across the full range: solid oak, beech, and pine furniture; upholstered sofas and chairs; bedroom and dining sets; custom joinery and cabinetry; raw timber and processed wood panels; and architectural wood elements.
EU compliance we handle
Importing wood and wood products into the Netherlands or Belgium requires specific documentation that many buyers struggle to obtain when working directly with Balkan manufacturers.
- EUTR (EU Timber Regulation): We prepare the due diligence statements showing legal harvest origin, required by EU law for all timber and wood products.
- FSC or PEFC certification: Where required by your buyers or retail partners, we source from certified mills and arrange the chain of custody documentation.
- Phytosanitary certificates: Required for solid wood packaging and some raw timber. Arranged with the relevant authority before shipment.
- EUR.1 movement certificates: Bosnia and Serbia both have Stabilisation and Association Agreements with the EU, giving preferential tariff treatment. We prepare the paperwork.
Typical order profile
Most furniture buyers we work with fill a 20ft or 40ft container per order, ranging from around 15,000 euros to 60,000 euros in product value. Lead times from confirmed order to loaded container are typically 4 to 8 weeks depending on whether items are stock or made to order. Road freight from Sarajevo or Belgrade to Rotterdam runs 5 to 7 days.
Why Balkans rather than Asia for furniture
European buyers increasingly prefer Balkan furniture sourcing for several reasons: shorter lead times allow lower safety stock; road freight is far cheaper and more reliable than ocean shipping; quality is verifiable in person; and Balkan manufacturers are increasingly familiar with Dutch and Belgian retail requirements. The total landed cost comparison often favours the Balkans once freight, compliance, and lead time are properly accounted for.
